Amazing Race Finalists: Tyler and James Win the Cash, but “Bama” Takes the Tears and Testament to True Grit

Amazing Race Finalists: Tyler and James Win the Cash, but “Bama” Takes the Tears and Testament to True Grit by Roxanne McDonald

Despite how disappointed some of us were to lose the boys or how others will miss the girls, there were still some favorites competing in the final three spots. And despite the jubilee or disappointment at the outcome, the finalists were both humble and profound.

I don’t know about you, but as I watched this season’s “Amazing Race,” I became attached to the cooler, kinder, more humble participants.

I loved Sarah for her grit in spite of her “handicap” and equally respected her partner Peter for cheering her on with such love and encouragement. I also had a fondness for Erwin and Godwin, who seemed to have the kindest spirits and the most stable approaches to the challenges and legs of the race as well as to each other. Notice how their dynamics never included sniping at each other to the point of mania or hysterics…as did those of Rob and Kim take us behind doors of their relationship we maybe didn’t need to witness.

While I wasn’t at first all that impressed with Team Alabama, though, the final leg of “Amazing Race” showed me (and probably many other viewers) what real loser mentality is made of. As Oscar Dahl of Buddy TV and other critics have characterized Team Alabama all along, they had every week of the show “succeeded against all odds,” being “physically inferior by leaps and bounds to the remaining teams,” but staying in the game “on the basis of their calmness and ability to step back and think before acting.”

So, it was a joy to see two recovering addicts/alcoholics and good friends that for the most part treated each other well (until the end when they started getting a little bitchy); it was alright to watch a couple at odds through most of the race at least place;

but it was delightful to witness the final placing of Team Alabama as they (of course, disappointedly) arrived in second place, but as they spoke to their being grateful for the unique experience of making it all the way and of making history by being the only all- female team to place.

They wanted to win, of course, but with their upright attitudes and intestinal fortitude, they won a place in America’s heart. And besides, their attitudes and exposure by way of “Amazing Race” will likely open doors of opportunity elsewhere…so they won’t lose out completely in the end. I mean, look at Rob and Amber Mariano. They have taken the reality TV route to more and more success (and cash). Go Alabama!

And congrats to “Amazing Race 10” winners, Tyler and James. You earned it!

  1. Roxanne, you and I were watching a different finish. You state “but it was delightful to witness the final placing of Team Alabama as they (of course, disappointedly) arrived in second place.” I hate to tell you this, but Alabama did not Place, they Showed in at third place hours behind and probably not even doing the 2 mile walk gto the East Village. Second Place went to Rob and Kimberly, who were only 10 to 15 minutes behind the winners.
