Amazing Race Advice and Admonitions
Amazing Race Advice and Admonitions by Roxanne McDonald

Advice that aint about getting along, being helpful, or any of that gooey or groovy crap, now. |
The advice may be for the benefit of viewers at home. It may be directed toward partners on the teams. Or it may just be the motivating mantras that work to keep individual racers going.
What do you tell others or yourself to keep going strong?
You can start with the wonderful advancing team of Charla and Myrna (my favorites, usually), and with Myrna saying how “if you don’t take risks, how are you going to win?”
You can define your position, your status, and hope:
“When you’re marked at last place (penalty instead of elimination), means you must wait 30 minutes [and hope] not everyone comes in….” Joyce
You can go to extremes:
“[Spend the night at the airport.] You wanna be at the back of the line, or you wanna be inconvenienced? Let’s try to start racing smart: stop, look, and listen.” Ian
If someone else, a competitor, whines about wanting to go back home, you just tell em:
“Go back. What are you waiting for?” Charla
Know the thing to do:
“I say wait here. They’re just doing something to be doing something. Stand in line is the thing to do.” Ian
When there’s no more space on a flight you need to be on, just ask:
“Can you put us on a waiting list?” Beauty Queen(s)
Or, get forceful, insisting the airline clerk to do what she is saying is impossible:
“Just dial…see? 8-8-8….” Charla
Get pissed when you are on stand-by, taken off stand-by and put on a plane, then taken off the plane because of a clerical error:
“You have got to be kidding me.” Danielle
Speak up:
Are you just going to abandon us [with no flights out]? What can you do for us?” Ian
Keep up. Check up:
“We should see if the others are still here. We have to know if they’re still here.” Eric
Point out the obvious, to rub it in for anyone within hearing distance:
“We have to wait for the first boat [dhow] to depart…. We will be on as team number one.” Myrna
Remember the earlier advice to yourself to stay cool:
“…though it is a little frustrating [waiting], knowing [about] the penalty.” Uchenna
Remember and remind others of the grade school lesson:
“Honor the line!” Eric
Then add to the demand in a neener-neener voice:
“We got here first and we’re in line.”
Demand. Just flat out demand:
“Just get me out of here [the airport].” Teri
Remember your place while tricking yourself as a way to stay motivated:
“You always have to keep on going and think you’re last, so you will work harder.” Myrna
Or, if wisdom, smart strategizing, and manipulation don’t work, grab your partner’s hand in one of yours and an airport teller’s hand with your other:
“Let’s just hold hands and pray, ‘Please let us get on this flight.’”
