American Idol Recap Top 9 Performance & Elimination Night
Here’s a recap of what happened on American Idol Season 8 this week. We’ll start with the performance night. There is no teacher or adviser whatsover this week. Songs from the performance night was chosen freely by the contestants as long as it belongs to the “Top Downloads of iTunes” category. Almost all the song choice of the contestants were not current hits as expected by almost everybody.
First thing, Ryan Seacrest as always introduce the judges which is kinda annoying because almost all people who are the judges. They’d been watching them for 8 seasons, common! Except for Kara who’s a recent addition but really we know them already why bother introducing them over and over again?
Here’s what my opinion and what the judges commented about the American Idol Top 9 performances of the night. From worst to best in my opinion.
Megan Joy Corkrey
She sang her rendition of “Turn Your Lights Down Low” by Bob Marley/Lauryn Hill. She’s really dumb when making song choices, i don’t get it why she’s still in the competition
Judges comments:
Kara said I really like you but think you’re in trouble, wrong song; Paula said need to take us by surprise, need to dig deep, on a stool in a spotlight with no distractions (like her horrible ‘dancing’); Simon said song was boring, indulgent, monotonous, all the things we liked about you are disappearing.
Anoop Desai
He sang “Caught Up’ by my favorite R&B artist Usher. I think Anoop is not reaching my expectations or everybody’s, even his choices of clothes bothers me, his vocals are alright, boring performance, a real let down
Randy said picked up your swagger, vocals good, not sure it was the right song for you; Kara said played it safe, no big difference, feels like frat guys dared you to sing Usher; Paula said showed your playful side, vocals really good, need to work on stage presence; Simon said complete and utter mess, wannabe, arrangement gave him headache, no originality.
Matt Giraud
He performed a song by The Fray “You Found Me”. I think the song did not suit him, kinda boring and also a let down from my perspective.
Paula said aborted things we love about you, more of a sound-alike, too much like Coldplay performance, wasn’t a great performance; Simon said you should be happy we don’t like it, uptight, too sound-alike, uncomfortable; Randy said wrong song, should pick Justin Timberlake or One Republic; Kara said going between rock side and R&B side, talented guy, doesn’t deserve to go home.
Lil Rounds
She sang “I Surrender” by Celine Dion. I prefer the R&B Lil Rounds. I don’t like her outfit and make up she looks too old, still waiting for that breakout performance, great power at the end, consistently poor song selection.
Randy said for me for you not good song choice, need more swagger (swagger and artistry tied as catch words of the Season), sang it well, need to young it up; Kara said sing Mariah or Mary J, when you’re up there it is effortless, you’re a singer who can let it out, wow us; Paula said I don’t want to see adult contemporary Lil Rounds; Simon said safe song to stay in the competition, wedding performance, old fashioned
Allison Iraheta
She sang “Don’t Speak” by No Doubt. Overall like her performance but I think her choice of outfit killed it. She played guitar at beginning of song, great vocals in parts plus I cannot understand the lyrics as she sang it.
Randy said vocally you can sing, a little ahead, like you with guitar, but what are you wearing?; Kara said rock in you comes out, clothes distracting, good but not your best; Paula said ‘axe’ added certain edge, vocal prowess rivals those twice your age, going right to the finish line ( and a bunch of other big slurred words, what was with her pre-written comments tonight – she could not get out some of the words not normally in her vocabulary); Simon said outfit out of Addams Family, precocious daughter trying to dress like a rock star, shouted the song.
Danny Gokey
Performed “What Hurts the Most” by Rascal Flatts. Sort of weak at the beginning with a great finish, suited his voice although did not change it up much.
Paula said this is where you thrive, leave me wanting more; Simon said best performance so far tonight, get a great song and sing it brilliantly; Randy said tonight’s show starts right here, keep your swagger moving, very nice; Kara said you moved everyone in this room emotionally, had goose bumps.
Scott MacIntyre
Sang “Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel. He’s best performance so far. He played the piano too. Don’t like his hairstylist.
Kara said made smart decisions tonight choosing Billy Joel singer songwriter, loved the new look; Paula said most proud of you nothing to do about your challenge but everything to make you forget about your challenge (I know this makes sense, but she makes my head hurt), risk paid off, thrill to sing one of your idols; Simon said best performance by a country mile, a different Scott; Randy said one of the best of the night, nice one.
Kris Allen
Performed “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers. He sang behind keyboard (i’m impressed he plays a lot of instruments, showed himself that he was a contender. Great vocals, his best performance.
Randy said you have been slaying them last couple weeks, one of the best performances of the night, so in the zone, so creative, so cool; Kara said that is artistry; Paula said pacing the competition to play to your strengths, your best performance, first cut from your album; Simon said very good arrangement, brought confidence, your best performance so far, like you behind the keyboard.
Adam Lambert
Sang a great rendition of “Play that Funky Music” by Wild Cherry. My bet always shatters the stage. He’s one of the great performers in American Idol, even the best AI had. Very impressive performance, great range. I love him! (Paula’s been dancing throught his performance)
Paula said true genius does not fulfill expectations shatters it; Simon said brave, got rid of karaoke nonsense others had done tonight, not as popular as last week; Randy said thought it could be corny but in the star zone baby; Kara said every week I cannot wait to get here and see what you are doing, like Studio 57 (she meant Studio 54).
Well, that’s how the performance went. So what about the elimination night? I think Corkrey will go from the start. Here’s a review of the elimination night.
Elimination Night
Thirty six million votes came in this week as Ryan Seacrest announced. He also said that reigning Idol David Cook will perform and Pokerface artist Lady Gaga is thier to wow the audience.
Ryan then asked Simon who will be going in his perpective. He answered that Anoop, Matt and Megan should be worried. Well, that’s right for me.
Another Ford video was made by the contestants and was shown. Great and punky. After that, the contestants sang a group version of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin.
Ryan Seacrest called for the lights to be dimmed and said that he was going to build the bottom three. He called out to Megan Corkrey, Matt Giraud and Kris Allen and told them to come and stand on one side of the stage. Next he called out to Adam Lambert, Lil Rounds and Allison Iraheta to take centre stage. Finally he called Scott MacIntrye, Danny Gokey and Anoop Desai and had them take the other side of the stage. Ryan Seacrest asked which group is safe and who could be the bottom 3?
Then David Cook came out the stage to perform his latest single “Come Back To Me”. Then he was presented with a plaque for his platinum album on behalf of 19E.
Next, Ryan announced who’s safe and who’s indeed on the bottom three. He then announced that Kris Allen, Matt Giraud, Lil Rounds, Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey, and Scott MacIntrye were safe, while Megan Corkrey, Allison Iraheta and Anoop Desai were in the bottom three. Allison in the bottom three? I can’t believe it.
Lady Gaga then performed her hit single Pokerface in front of American Idol audience. Great performance.
Next, Ryan asked Simon if how many out of the bottom three is worth saving. Simon replied, only one. I know who it is.
Then Ryan announced the two contestants who are safe. It was Anoop and Allison (whew!). Simon told Megan that she will perform her last song because they are not saving her tonight. Well its about time. Megan extends her gratitude to her fellow contestants, American Idol judges and for American on her montage.

Song choice is what really makes or vreaks alot of contestents. It’s been stated so often that I’m still surprised how many get that basic element all wrong. Just like in life in general you just have to play to your strengths.
