American Idol to Call for Original Song Compositions…but When?

American Idol to Call for Original Song Compositions…but When? by Roxanne McDonald

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Don’t get too excited creative nonfiction writers—unless you are also song writers. Amping up the interactivity factor, American Idol will be calling for original songs from the public.

Ryan Seacrest (I think…head down and hands typing when I heard it) announced it on the last leg of the audition tour for American Idol. Bloggers are buzzing about it. And aspiring songwriters are seeking information on it. The word is that American Idol will host a songwriting

competition; and the winning song(s) will be performed during the finales of season 6.
Well, this has been the word since August of 2006.

But the frenzy is in songwriters being teased by the possibility but not being informed what to do and where to go, exactly. The announcement last night just hinted at the upcoming contest, of course to create interest, and implied we should watch for news, announcements, and rules on the official American Idol website.

When you go to the site, however, there is nothing on the home page, and on the bbs there are only more questions about where to submit, etc..

In a January 8th discussion of the competition at Reality TV World, Christopher Rocchio first reported of the new finale twist. Simon Fuller, creator and co-producer of American Idol told reporters that the exciting possibility of having songwriters compete would give the show much needed choices for final songs.

Randy Jackson, as Rocchio notes in his February 2nd follow-up piece, had also mentioned the competition as a solution to the problem of not having enough “good” [read: top 10] songs to choose from. But Randy had also said the competition would not be announced until the final 12 segment of the show begins.

So they have the idea. They have slated it, but have not finalized it, and yet have leaked it so that by the time the competition starts there will likely be as many writers submitting as there have been singers standing in audition lines. We get the need for hype, but we also get frustrated at the teasing minus the technical details.

I have done the same runaround research as you all, likely,

but here is where I ended up making the most sense of the process and getting the most current info:
Keep an eye on Reality TV World for updated reports.

Check Spinme.com for music business coach Joe Taylor Jr.’s suggestions and links.

Check the American Idol bulletin boards.

And keep an eye on the news at SirLinksAlot, where you can find all words Idol!

Good luck to all songwriters.
