Idol Cubed and Simon Cooled

Idol Cubed and Simon Cooled by Roxanne McDonald

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Simon brought the lighter side to his critiques of the final three’s final three sets.

He was not full of unique analogies or special metaphors, but was instead laughing and light, while he spoke to the genius that is Jordin, Blake, and Melinda:

JUDGES’ SONG CHOICES

For Jordin, Simon selected “Wishing on a Star.”
Simon’s comments: You sang it brilliantly. I just wish we hadn’t done the weird jazz arrangement, though…. I like the purer version…. Even though I chose it, it wasn’t one of your [better] performances.

For Blake, Paula chose “Roxanne.”

Simon’s comments: I’m not gonna call that earth-shattering, because it wasn’t. The problem was you were [called upon] to do a [forced] impersonation of Sting…. It wasn’t fantastic.
For Melinda, Randy chose “I Believe in You and Me.”
Simon’s comments: Very, very different song to sing; I think it was your best performance in the last four weeks; and round one goes to Melinda.

PRODUCERS’ SONG CHOICES

For Jordin, the producers chose “She Works Hard for the Money.”
Simon’s comments: It was actually a very good performance. I thought the arrangement was still a little bit old fashioned but [still laughing at Paula’s laughing jokey thing] in the end was very good.

For Blake, the producers chose “This Love.”
Simon’s comments: Actually, I preferred that to the first. You sounded very comfortable… [and it] didn’t sound like a copycat performance. That was good. Yeah.

For Melinda, the producers chose “Nutbush City Limits.”
Simon’s comments: Loved that side of you. I thought it was, actually, again, another brilliant performance.

[Ryan asks who takes this round, and Simon says he is going to “call this one a tie.”]

IDOL CONTESTANTS’ CHOICES

Jordin chose “I Who have Nothing.”

Simon’s comments: There’s no disputing the fact that you sang that very well…, but there was a part of me that hated that a sixteen-year-old was singing a sixty-year-old song…. [Jordin later questions Ryan, asking if the song wasn’t big in the 70s; but likely, Simon was referring to the current age of the singer? I don’t know.]

Blake chose “When I Get You Alone.”
Simon’s comments: I actually really liked that. And I’m gonna say, Blake, this is what I have liked about you throughout the competition: you don’t play it safe; you take a risk; you look like you’re having fun. [Blake says he is having a blast.] Good for you!

Melinda chose “I’m a Woman.”
Simon’s comments: Melinda, Melinda, Melinda. Loved the little strip tease at the top. [Randy says, “wha?” and Simon explains that she stripped off her coat….] I’ve got to say this now, Melinda: we’ve known each other eleven weeks now, and if I’m gonna award a place in the final to a person who has delivered consistently week after week, it’s you.

And when Ryan asked who the judges saw in the finals, Simon said he wants to see his girl Melinda up there—a switch from his earlier prediction that Jordin would take the title?
