No Shock Simon and the Final Four

No Shock Simon and the Final Four by Roxanne McDonald

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket BeeGee night was tougher on the semi-finalists than Simon was.

Idol Thoughts blogger notes how Ken Warwick (Idol co-producer) interviewed that the disco genre didn’t suit Lakisha (not showing her range?). Others suggest Blake should or should not have chosen a weak second song and/or should or should not have mixed it up with beat boxing. Still others comment how changing up the classic BeeGee tunes was a poor decision for some.

Simon remains true to the integrity of critique, and suggests some of the above and more:

Melinda first does an epic performance of “Love You Inside and Out.”

Simon picks up with Paula’s commentary, saying, “I think what Paula was attempting to say was that she wasn’t that impressed by it…. That was a backing vocalist

[performance]. It wasn’t a star’s performance. You’ve got another song, so I want to see [you come back].”

Melinda also delivers a great vocal, though the first part is a bit affected, of the song “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?”

In response to Paula giving advice about throwing out something and sticking to something else, Simon begins his critique with, “You don’t understand a word of that, do you?” He continues, “I think the second half of that song has put you into the semi-finals.”

Blake does what Gibb says is an appropriate use of his beat-boxing, showing amazing versatility and capturing such a high key with “You Should be Dancing.”

Simon says, “I’ll give you ‘unique’ [which is what Paula or Randy had said], and I know this is a matter of personal taste, but I thought that was absolutely terrible, that performance.”

For his second performance, Blake attempts a kind of grabled and hectic approach (with some awesome UB-40 sounding flavor, though) to “This is Where I Came In.”

Simon says, “I don’t know what that song was, I don’t know why you chose it. I thought it was completely tuneless. You’ve not had a good night—and that was a really poor choice of song.”

Lakisha delivers a really tough and sassy “Stayin’ Alive.”

[Paula says it is good she reads the audience—who were on their feet]: “They’re heading for the exits,” Simon snipes.

Then he adds, “Well, Lakisha, no kiss tonight, baby. We’re back to the shouting again. The performance was verging on scary. You’ve got two songs—you’ve got to bring it back. Not great tonight, so far.”

Lakisha also gives what I thought was another goose bump-inducing, tear-producing rendition of “Run to Me.”

Simon concedes, “It was better than the first song,” but, he adds, “It still wasn’t great…. I think you and Blake are vulnerable tonight.”

For her first performance, Jordin does a front-of-the-pack performance with “To Love Somebody.”

Simon, who has been nudged by Ryan to keep it short tonight, says, “Best song choice…, best performance so far. We’re back in the competition.”

And Jordin closes the show with what Streisand would have been proud she attempted to emulate her with, “Woman in Love.”

Simon says, “I love the song, but I’ve got to be honest: I thought it was old-fashioned and actually very pageanty—from your dress to [inaudible over the boos and hisses]. But you’re 17, Jordan, aren’t you?”
