Seacrest In: and Letting Us in, too…on an American Idol that Promises to be Fulfilling

Seacrest In: and Letting Us in, too…on an American Idol that Promises to be Fulfilling by Roxanne McDonald

Ryan Seacrest speaks for Dick Clark, continues to banter with his [absent] co-nemesis, and gives a shout out…sort of…to Idol fans.

In a pre-New Year’s Eve interview, as it appeared on TV Guide.com, Ryan Seacrest spoke of the exciting things to come in 2007, many of which he will have his hand in. As a voice for the recovering Dick Clark (who had a stroke earlier last year), Seacrest was getting amped for acting as co-announcer and -host at the Times Square annual

ball-dropping count-down gala. He told reporters not to expect Simon Cowell, whom he playfully suggested wouldn’t show at any event where he was not the spotlighted celebrity. This jab of course follows suit in their catch-as-catch-can banter that makes American Idol especially fun between performances, buddy-bashing that started with Seacrest sniping at Simon’s fashion (or lack thereof) and which continues into ego-assessing and gossip-mongering we all know is not “real”. Or is it?

Off-the-cuff is what Ryan likes (and what he is obviously good at), as he admits that gigs like New Years’ are most comfortable for him, since he has trouble with memorizing scripted material. But he has no trouble with promoting himself or Idol: promising the buddy he loves to hate will be even more of a curmudgeon this season, Seacrest also promises more competitive, aggressive, and good (along with “naïve”) talent.

The host with the most—charisma, b.s., and controversy over his sexual preferences) hyped the show by discussing what we get to see for the first six hours of the season, the audition phase, and by saying that while they [Idol production team] got “tired of a few of [those] contestants [who] were just from another planet [in, for example, Seattle],” and while they thought, “‘Well, what’s going to be left?’” they were, Seacrest says, “fulfilled”.

We trust we will be, too, as usual, with all phases and episodes of American Idol 6.
