Simon’s Denouncing Lounge Singing Doesn’t Impact Voting This Week
Simon’s Denouncing Lounge Singing Doesn’t Impact Voting This Week by Roxanne McDonald

The blah boys still didn’t get it, Simon said. But, evidently, neither did we. |
Maybe lounge singing is inevitable…when the Idol contestants are given a list of lounge tunes to choose from. Maybe the challenge, then, is in taking the from the nuance of old song and making it fresh, bringing his own style to an otherwise overdone piece. But why, then, did copy-crooner Sanjaya, who was so incredibly dull, beat out the at least bouncy and engaged AJ?
I missed logging these comments for Tuesday, but maybe a re-visiting will give us insight. Or maybe it will give the blah boyz a reminder, a clue—if they’re not sequestered and prevented from reading up on past problems with
their performances:
After Phil sang a perky “Missing You:
I’m not jumping out of my chair. I think you’re very popular. I thought your film piece was terrific. I still think you have a very unoriginal voice. I’m not hearing anything unique. I’m just hearing a very good karaoke singer. [But,] you’re not going anywhere; you will be back next week; trust me.
After Jared sings a subtle and sexy “Let’s Get it On”:
I think what Paula was trying to say was I’m glad you’re trying to make the attempt…. It did remind me, though, of the Love Boat. It did actually seem corny in parts.
After A.J. sings slow and moody then cute “Feeling Good”:
I have to say that that was actually nearly very good. There were some problems in the middle, but you’ve made yourself stand out. You have some personality and you look strangely comfortable….
After Sanjaya sings such a bland version of “Steppin’ out with My Baby” that we are just begging to be put out of our misery:
I actually agree with Randy, except I would go one step further: it was like some ghastly luncheon where parents ask their kids to dress up and sing and they hate [doing] it. Oddly, you whispered halfway through and I don’t get why did that…other than the dress up part….
After Chris Sligh does a most provocative delivery of “Trouble”:
The reason we put you through is because we thought you were a very good singer; and tonight you were a very good singer. I was a little bit concerned that you’d dedicated a song called “Trouble”, but the lyrics make sense [now].
After Nick does a very tepid “Fever”:
It [would have been good] if you had charisma. You lacked charisma. You dressed like you just came from the office. You’ve got a good voice…now we’ve got a charisma issue to deal with.
After Blake does what he later calls a “vocal turntable” style, replete with scat, beatbox, and simulated scratching for “Virtual Insanity”:
Blake, I’m going to disagree with Paula and Randy. I’ll tell you why: because I like you and I liked what you did last week…[but] you were a copycat; the middle part was original; and then you lost the tuning at the end.
[Paula and Randy go mental, and Simon retracts some of the copycat commentary.]
After Brandon does an in-tune but hardly interesting enough version [as, Say, Dilana did on RockStar SuperNova] of “Time after Time”:
[Paula and Randy bickering and chatting back and forth, etc.]
Can we just take this back to a singing competition? [Randy says how he dedicated it to his Grams…]. I know, I know. I love Grandma. But it’s a singing competition. You have to come out and do what four or five [girls?] did last week. You’re a good singer, and [you have to show that].
And, by the way, it’s my mum’s birthday in November. Happy birthday, Mum, in six months. And by the way, I like puppies. Love puppies.
After Chris Richardson does a spunky “Geek in the Pink”:
Chris, we said when we first met you you’re somebody to watch. For me, best tonight.
After Sundance does a powerful, get-audience-on-its-feet “Mustang Sally”:
Well I am glad we’ve got the Sundance back that we really liked…. Let’s not get carried away. That’s a popular song, everyone was up on their feet…. I actually think you can do better, but, that was good.
Now you tell me why, after all these comments, and how we can see which singers should go through, why, why did Sanjaya stay and A.J. go? How many family members from how many countries are calling in for this simp who played dress up but who sang down–way down below par?
