Simonese Strikes a Chord

Simonese Strikes a Chord Some Girls Still Can’t Feel or Hear by Roxanne McDonald

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Simon’s criticism taken seriously and intelligently applied—save for one, who, after Simon tells her she can’t sing, responds that everyone has a different style…. Wha?

Antonella Barba has been, says Simon, “getting a lot of stick in the media.” Rightfully so—though those pics are not all that explicit…. But the more significant point in the competition and in Simon’s critiques is not criticism for the sake of criticism as he reminds us, but is how terrible singing has got to go. So little patch of boob showing or no boob showing, Barba should be out.

Here is the Simonese for Wednesday night:

After Jordin does a feisty but hyper “Heartbreaker”:

I’m not quite as enthusiastic. I thought it was a bit manic, a bit shrieky in the middle. You’ve done well; you’re showing personality; you will 100% be here next

week…but I don’t think it was your strongest performance.
After Sabrina delivers a focused, engaged, clearly comfortable-on-stage performance of “Don’t Let Go”:

You’re a great singer, but it is lacking the emotion I see from your main competitors [names Lakisha, Melinda, and Stephanie]. …it was a little bit robotic—I see, partly from your choice of song, it reminded me of a hotel performance.

Once Antonella tortures us with a weak, off-key version of “Put Your Records On”:

You’ve gone as far as you can go, Antonella. The reality is, and I think you know this yourself, you’re surrounded by some remarkable girl singers, [and I’m not sure what more/else you can do]. You’ve handled yourself [well]—taken a lot of stick in the media—but I’m not gonna patronize you…. I just wish you could sing better.

After Haley finishes a pedestrian delivery of “If My Heart had Wings”:

I thought it was horrible…like some terrible, ghastly hisgh school musical performance. I don’t know your name…, and this is the problem. …You haven’t made an impression in [this] competition.

After Stephanie does a sort of screeching and halting rendition of “Sweet Thang”:

No question you’re one of the best. You have a tendency to go a little bit copycat…. You need to find your style…, but for me, you will be 100% here next week.

After Lakisha does such a far-ranging and perfect rendition of “I Have Nothing” that this viewer was impelled to do a standing o like Paula does:

What we have seen tonight that you brought…talent, passion, believability, and just picking up on what last week I mentioned about the outfit: tonight, you look beautiful.

Once Gina finishes a sassy and rugged rendition of a rock number, “Call Me When You’re Sober”:
You enjoyed that, didn’t you? Seeing you look comfortable…this is the girl we wanted in the competition. You tended to scream the song, but actually I hope to see you next week. You’re a breath of fresh air. [Try to ] pick up more melodic songs…. I hope the song wasn’t too extreme for the audience.

And after Melinda finishes belting out a most severe, pointed, sexy “I’m a Woman,” which also should elicit a standing o:

You little tiger. [Grin] I thought we had a pussycat. I love that. It’s quite obvious, I don’t have to tell you how good a singer you are, [so] it’s nice to see you enjoying it. We’ve had other singers saying [how] this is their stepping stone, but I [see] you’re loving you [time in the spotlight, and you will 1 million % be here next week] [[thanks for the words I missed to the great Laura Tucker of Reality Shack, again.]] It’s good to see you enjoying yourself up there.

Bye bye Antonella….
