Songs From The Cinema – American Idol 8 Top 7
It’s “Songs from the Cinema” week on ‘Idol,’ and with such a wide variety of genres and themes, no one should have a bad night this time around. You’d think so anyway!
Allison Iraheta
‘I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing’
by Aerosmith
A refreshing change from her usual hard, edgy rock performance. It was a little slow, a little overly breathy in the beginning but she worked it out. At the end, it was distinctly Allison.
Paula: You are authentic. You are a remarkable, talented young lady.
Simon:I think you are the girls’ only hope in the competition. You are getting stronger, more confident.
Anoop Desai
‘Everything I Do, I Do It For You’
by Bryan Adams
The original was borderline cheesy. Anoop’s rendition was firmly in cheese territory and definitely boy band material.
Randy:You have definitely found your zone. It was in tune and emotional.
Kara:You found your place. I thought it was one of your best vocal. I felt connected to you. You did a good job.
Adam Lambert
‘Born To Be Wild’
by Steppenwolf
The showman is back! No more suits and slicked back hair. He ruled the stage and had the audience in the palm of his hand with that electric performance. He reminds me of David Bowie.
Paula: Fortune rewards the brave. You are one of the bravest contestants I have ever witnessed.
Simon:Vocally, incredible. However, it was a little like watching a Rocky Horror musical. A portion of the audience will love it, some will despise it.
Matt Giraud
‘Have You Ever Loved A Woman’
by Bryan Adams
It was a beautiful, poignant, and heartfelt. One of Matt’s finest performances.
Randy:That performance was interesting. The bridge was rough. When you take song with a simple melody, you can’t do too much. You fell down in more places than not.
Kara:It was a struggle between rock and soul. You tried to put a lot of soul and R&B into the song but you took away some of the core melodies.
Danny Gokey
‘Endless Love’
by Lionel Richie
Groan, not another ballad! This one was bland, unremarkable, unchallenging and routine.
Paula:You grabbed us in the beginning, wowed us in the middle and slayed us at the end. A beautiful rendition.
Simon:I’m disappointed it was a very traditional version. I was a bit bored.
Kris Allen
‘Falling Slowly’
by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova
This song should have been named “Falling Asleep Slowly”. It was dull and monotonous. There were no highs and only one low note at the end.
Randy:It never caught on for me. It was pitchy from note one.
Kara:It is difficult to pick an obscure song. For me, it was one of your best.
Lil Rounds
‘The Rose’
by Bette Midler
In the past, Lil was criticized for not stamping her identity onto a song. No such criticism this time. It was all Lil and I enjoyed it.
Paula: You could not have sung a more beautiful song. Sometimes a road is really long and is worthwhile taking especially when you made it this far.
Simon:The song was too soft for you. Too middle of the road. You are not the artist we met 8 weeks ago.
It’s too bad the best performances of the night were at the beginning. The three As – Allison, Anoop, and Adam – are my top three hands down. Kris is in the middle, leaving my bottom three Matt, Danny, and Lil. Danny isn’t going anywhere, which leaves Matt and Lil to duke it out for the bottom spot. I say this will be Lil’s last week. She’s done well lasting this long and just isn’t getting any better. She had great potential, but has never really brought it.
Miley Cyrus and the awesome Jennifer Hudson perform on the results show Wednesday!
