The Cruelest American Idol Cut of All
The Cruelest American Idol Cut of All by Roxanne McDonald

The most torturous part of American Idol is cruel to the contestants and to the listening audience. |
Tonight’s elimination show proved the most miserable part of the American Idol experience is when, after they have told a singer he or she is out of the competition, that person going home is asked to sing one more time.
Now, if we couldn’t stand the performance, or didn’t like it enough to vote for the singer the night or nights before, then why do we want to be subject to it agin?
And likely worse for the performer saying bye-bye, how miserable is it to sing the song that got you booted?
Tonight, as Alaina Alexander was the first of the evening to be sent home, she was first quite reserved, humble, stabilized, etc., not only telling of her appreciation for the opportunity and surprise at having made it this far and all but wishing all of the remaining Idol contestants well.
Then, however, she was asked to sing last night’s
song…and she absolutely couldn’t do it. She faltered, cracked, cried through the place where the words typically go, apologized and then just stopped…as the other women circled about her and hugged her and as the American Idol back-up singers carried out the rest of “I’m Not Ready to Make Nice.”
Also ironic is how the departing singers’ song choices are often suggestive of leaving, being sorry, not being good enough, of being vengeful fo being wronged…. Ooops.
Oh, well, if it is any consolation, runners up and low placers on the list of finalists get recognition and often performing gigs…just for making that far on Idol. Kelly Pickler is singing right now, to give testament to that. What a doll she is—still showcasing her ignorance about the world—something about spider sushi being actual spiders—but still a stunning southern songstress.
Best of luck Alaina. You will find your niche, too.
