Refreshing Reality: Confessions of a Matchmaker by Roxanne McDonald

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket If refreshing reality is not an oxymoron….

“Confessions of a Matchmaker” could be such a

disappointment, or could be just another “Bachelor” or “Joe Blow” knock-off or “Blind Date” or Fifth Wheel” repeat that it has us longing for the days of the more conservative, more innocuous “The Newlywed Game” or “The Dating Game”.
But “Confessions of a Matchmaker”, with its astringent wake-up call to daters offers viewers a new take on finding love and avoids the stale programming rut that A&E might have been veering toward.

The ballsy, no-nonsense, tough-love approach of professional dating coach Patti Novak (who also slams us awake with hard rock sound-over on her website) is up there with the brutality of honest criticism as voiced by Simon Cowell, Nigel Lithgoe, or SuperNanny Jo.

But, too, if you are getting worn weary by the accents, a fresh dialect wraps around a familiar vernacular, to give us what I would swear are Midwest sounds (though the service and show hail from Buffalo, New York).

Even the ads on A &E are a relief from the typical hyper-exaggerations. While so many—too many—new reality shows are boasting being “the best,” flouting the virtual fact that theirs is the show “everyone is watching/talking about,” or bragging how theirs is the

“number one show in America” (all of which crack me up as I wonder how fifty shows can be number one…according to whom?), “Confessions…” quotes actual pros, critics from the likes of The New York Post or The New York Times.
For those of us who are not yet totally jaded about editing but not so gullible as to believe all we see is all there is, the featured dating searchers are also pitiful, endearing, and/or evocative of our sympathy or empathy.

Fan favorites will show how John the 40-year-old virgin, who Patti says is way in need of love and, she figures, way gay, will come out to an audience rooting for him to connect. And even the dingy walking boobs and wig who still, at 33, lives with Mom and Dad, gets your awww button going.

Feisty, ferocious in meeting the goals of today’s singles, and refreshing.
