It was therefore that much fun to watch the reprisal of “Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels” this weekend—a re-run of several of the reality TV installments (run again to promote excitement for the next season–Simmons getting extension for his second most-watched reality show on A&E).
Just as interesting the second time around were the
highlighted ego trips to Self-aggrandizement City, the showcased successful attitudes, adventures, and ventures, and the behind-the-scenes good-humored parodies of the KISS legend with that long old tongue.
As he told the therapist in an appointment Shannon won at auction, money is not important, it is THE most important thing. So while Shannon is concerned with his eating disorder, his habit of folding t.p. into little squares, and his lack of desire to marry or have any more kids, Gene is concerned with ways to make even MORE money.
He launches the Gene Simmons Bikini Car Wash, establishes the Gene Simmons Fetish Beauty Pageant, and creates several other ventures with his name attached.
After all, his name is what sells the product or service, his name is what confirms for him his legendary status, and his name is what perpetuates his belief in his own godliness.
All done, however, with a cheeky stoicism (yes, that’s possible, if you’re Gene Simmons), a couple of self-effacing moments for balance, and much loving mockery from his un-wife and kids.
Shannon interviews with one or both of the kids in the diary room/confessional style but in conversational format at the same time—telling the teens how Dad disappears during conflict, is ridiculous about never marrying her, and is way too full of his iconic self.
The kids rochambo for who will drive Mom to the bikini car was; laugh about Dad’s auto-fixation; and roast the hell out of him at every chance they get. While Sophine is much more conservative with her commentaries, Nicholas has a blast
impersonating his dad: at a garage sale, Nic claims to be Gene Simmons, increasing the value of anything he comes in contact with. He holds up an old person going for 2 bucks and spits on it, then says that NOW it is work two million!!!
And the most interesting thing is that not only does Shannon crack up at the charades, laughing so hard she says she is going to pee her pants, but Dad, the Great Chaim Witz, the man still surrounding himself with fans, lackies, and female beauties (which makes him more powerful, makes people pay more attention, and makes photographers take more pictures) takes it all in stoic strides…nodding, agreeing, and making more money off the images and imitations all the while.
