This blog article is dedicated to Julia Williams.
Bittersweet elimination of Julia, my favorite, my hopeful. And she won the morning challenge: to cook a fabulous dish for
the “trend-setters, those with their fingers on the pulse— Alhambra High School students.
During elimination, though (with Bonnie for the first time getting high praise for having her best “spot on” night so far and getting the privilege of nominating two), Julia was dismissed. But not with the usual vitriol from Chef Ramsay. Instead, here is what Ramsay did and said, how he conducted what was for him a most difficult elimination:
Bonnie put Rock up for his temper and Julia up for having had difficulties with garnish. Bonnie’s thinking (I think) was that while she wanted three girls in the finals, she had to put up two people and only Rock remained for the guys’ side. Rock’s anger and fighting with Jen would trump Julia’s difficulty with garnish, and Rock would be sent home. (SPOILER INFO ABOUT TO BE MUTTERED HERE….

On with the anger…..
So Rams has Rock and Julia step forward, and he is shaking his head and saying how here he’s got one guy absolutely driven to get on top of his career and one woman who has made significant improvement.
He then adds, “God, I’m really sorry,” as if he is about to cry!
He fires Julia, but does so in the softest of voices and then tells her, “Listen, you have done phenomenally well. I’m going to do something I’ve never done before [which right then and there points to how potentially promising Julia is]: I’m going
to personally send you to culinary school because you have a talent…; there’s something amazing about you….” And he tells her, after that, she must “come back and win it hands down.”
So many things come up for me as I watch my favorite chef receive this unique and personalized treatment:
1. Julia is one of so many who have skills and innate gifts that go unnoticed and un-nurtured for want of resources, and Ramsay knows this and is doing what is supremely generous.
2. Ramsay has been raked over the coals of the press for refusing to finance—for the umpteen-millionth time—his brother’s criminal court proceedings; and his generosity cut off (as in TOUGH LOVE) his brother, finally, it can find expression in more needful and more deserving persons.
3. And Julia’s getting this first-time, unique gift from Ramsay speaks volumes about her worth as a chef–more than, or louder than, any of his billions of rants and ridicules over time!
Go Julia…with the blessings of Ramsay and with the blessing of your massive fan base!!!!
