Daybreak Is One Day I can See Over and Over Again

I must admit I am still miffed at why ABC has shut down Lost for a few months and replaced it’s time slot with Daybreak starring Taye Diggs. |
Lost is perhaps my favorite tv show and it seems that it had only just begun and boom – they take it off the air.
Well, since we all watch our tv shows on Tivo now (do you?) the time a series airs should have little if any impact on whether we will watch it or not. The determining factor is if we find out about a show in time to start watching it from the beginning. This is especially important for series that have continue story lines as it is much harder to jump in mid season to a show that already has a history behind it.
Daybreak has been pimped since the beginning of the Fall tv season and I must admit from the moment I had seen the commercials/trailers I knew I wanted to see this show. Since Tivo is generally only 14 days forward with schedules I only made a mental note of the show.
When Lost concluded with it’s Fall Finale (man that is so stupid – a Fall finale – give me a break) and the spot ran for Daybreak I went into Tivo and set it to record the debut episode.
Generally I will watch a show before adding a season pass to record all of it’s episodes. If the show sucks I simply do not watch it again. Sometimes I’ll give a show a second shot and try an additional episode (like Men In Trees which I ended up removing from the Tivo season pass).
Well, I watched the premiere episode of Daybreak and I was blown away! It handled all the possible plot problems and showed me how it was a viable concept that could sustain our interest week after week.
The problem was for me that I did not set up a season pass and the second episode came and passed without getting recorded by my Tivo. I kicked myself and was unhappy I missed it but lucky for me ABC came to the rescue. You see these days the networks have finally wised up and have been starting to embrace the internet. In this case ABC had the full episode online to be viewed for free! And with limited commercial interruption! So I had a second chance to watch Daybreak episode two.
While I must admit I was somewhat reluctant to watch a tv show (42 minutes) online on my PC, I have to say it was a far better experience than I expected. For one thing the quality was very impressive, unlike the over compressed highly pixilated low quality videos we watch on youtube and GoogleVideo. Those suck big time! ABC videos look great (but they need a volume control)!
It was a pleasant experience to watch the episode on my pc. Good quality. No buffering problems and the commercials (Cingular) were not that obnoxious. I was really impressed.
The episode turned out to be a very good one and last night I followed and watched episode 3 of Daybreak and I must say it has risen to the top of my fave tv shows and has earned a spot on my Tivo for a season pass!
So, without getting too deep in details about Daybreak, let me just say that it has a great cast, a great storyline and lots of action which is done in grand cinematic style. This show does not come across as a cheap tv action series with half baked stunts. This show feels like a theatre quality movie. And the writing is quite clever. The premise of reliving the same day over and over again could easily have become cliché or unbelieveable, but the writers have pulled it off. Each episode is as exciting as the next. Things that have occurred in the past do not always happen exactly the same way. In fact as we just found out last episode the way things are handled actually shapes what will happen in the future – aka the next day.
If you are looking for an action packed hour of solid first class entertainment, give Daybreak a shot. It should NOT ruin the experience if you have missed the first few episodes. Also, check ABC online to see if they have a past episode you can watch for free. It really deserves your attention!
