Still Politicking, Still Mimicking Kid Nation by Roxanne McDonald

Or as one observer noted, still feeding the Marxist, capitalist machine…just like the big boys and girls. |
My Dad always tells me that a man is as good as his word…on a handshake…; I thought maybe that’s get across to them. But you know, we’ll have to see if it does or not. ~Michael, attempting negotiations with the obstinate older boy Town Council
First Adult Experience of the Day
Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green hold their weekly primaries, conduct their platforms, and vote their sweet little hearts out:
DK replaces a happy-to-step-down Guylan on Red.
Michael displaces a displeased Laurel on Green.
Blaine takes over for Zach on Yellow, as Zach whispers to his replacement how Town Council job sucks.
Greg takes the position away from Andrew on Blue, much to many kids’ surprise.
Next Adult Lesson of the Day
Laurel extends her expression of disdain over being unseated on the Town Council, saying how she has no say in the decisions, has no say about the reward choices, has no say in anything.
Adult Expression of the Week
Town meeting is opened by Blaine, who introduces the subject of Bonanza citizens having difficulties communicating and respecting each other, so he prefaces the meeting by suggesting that the pow-wow can go on as long as they want it to, as long as they
chatter and giggle, etc.. So today they are going to play the communication game.
Citizens suggest [to cams] that maybe the leaders should practice what they preach. But as each speaker is up front, if anyone utters a thing, a word, a phrase, a giggle, the line-up introducing each member of the town will start all over again.
Two start-overs in, Jared (still adorable, still my favorite) tells us how badly this respect game sucks. Sophia announces how displeased she is with how the new Council is treating them. And Laurel iterates how the most disrespectful person in town has no right to teach respect to the rest.
One of the Blue’s members eavesdrops on the latter discussion, and reports back. But what do the older boys do? They sit in chairs in the middle of Dirt Row and hassle the female passersby. That’ll teach ‘em, Blaine implies.
Other kids confront the bad boys and suggest instead of insuting the girls they could be working. Michael says he is as of that moment an “individual”. And Blaine, speaking for the council, bullies back with a comment that they are thinking of awarding the Gold Star to no one this week.
Yep. Just following in the elders’ footsteps alright.
Though the kids must be giving adults in general a return on their money, so to speak, as the Nielsen audience is composed of 18- to 25-year-olds still watching…about 4.7 million of them, anyway, still feeding and thereby perpetuating the fodder-making for the sponsorial, commercial machine.
