Last Comic Comes Through

Last Comic Comes Through by Roxanne McDonald

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket After a lackluster season in the opinion of many, “Last Comic Standing” hosts a finale that made most of us utter the words of the Comic Book Guy on “The Simpsons”: best episode ever.

And not just cause John Reep won it, either. Congrats John!

Yeah, there was just too much sand and not enough glass this season. The comics going through early on were unrightfully usurping the spots of much better comics. [Still stinging from the loss of Matt Kirshen, for example.]

The replacement host was, eh, okayyy.

And the challenges were less than original or entertaining, save the one called “Last Jester Standing…,” and that was only hilarious when the contestants joked about their ridiculous costumes.

But last night’s finale made LCS once again the engaging and laugh-out-loud delight it has been in the past.

First, the return of the judges: love two of the three, and their work was featured.

Next, the roasts. Typically, even, the roasters are funnier, but last night both Lavelle and John slammed with the

funnies when it was their turn. Did ya see how much Tammy laughed? Did ya note how Chris was even dumbfounded by some of the retaliatory humor? All good.

Next, the “best of” clips. The best—I was so glad was named so—being Jay London the self-deprecating intellectual comic, a clip with his punchline featuring his take on his looks, and a camera shot of Drew Carey CRACKING up.

Then, then…, the appearance of the supercomics: how awesome was it that Carrot Top railed on the celebrity spoofing? The Nicole Richie bath towel. The OJ Simpson stole my props joke. God I love that inverted logic style of comedy. Would have been even better if Dane Cook, smartass supreme, had done a bit—and not just come on to plug and show clips from his upcoming movie. But, hey, we got to hear that Cook laugh, reminding us of funnier times on tour and of how Cook took on a LCS runner-up that year [the gorgeous and snarky funny Gary Goldman].

Now I’m going to miss the weekly stand-up…however weak it may have at times been.
