Bumpy and Wavering Project Runway

Bumpy and Wavering Project Runway by Roxanne McDonald

Project Runway with Heidi Klum Project Runway keeps on putting a ding in the shears, a snag in the cloth, a stone on the runway.

Vincent is gone. It is, as one of the remaining five says, “the end of an era!” The next challenge is not announced on the runway or in the workroom. Instead, Jeff, Kayne, Laura, Uli, and Michael are told they have been invited to a party put on by L’Oreal. There they will be joined by “special guests”.

Jeffrey says it’s a trap.

At a chic club the surprise guests turn out to be Vincent and Angela, returned to compete in a task that requires they use black and white fabrics to design a cocktail party outfit.

Because they

won previous challenges, Vincent the everyday woman and Angela the Macy’s challenges, they have been reinstated in the competition. However, three people will be out this round.

Kayne is gulping champagne, and Jeffrey is stating, “Whatever. I don’t have to like it.” Besides, he adds, the “good news is …” and finding nothing to say to fill in that blank just shrugs in his usual apathetic fashion.

In the workroom, Kayne, ever the sport about things, pats Vince on the back and asks him if it is good to be back. Vince is cautious and says he is just ready to get at the next project.

With clips of Vince and Angela’s team project days (or hours) playing, Laura tells the camera (us) that Angela ‘s team members carried “a hell of a lot of weight for the win Angela had,” and later tells Angela the same thing.

Ever straight and almost stoic Tim Gunn arrives in the workroom and tells them that PR wants to be sure they choose the right three to go to the final challenge. The designers will have 15 minutes to sketch and 100 bucks for shopping…, AND will have to use every single scrap of material they buy on the design. He also stresses that this is all about make-up and models’ appearance in the designs.

Laura buys

the exact right amount, evidently, to create a baby doll black lace over white with a low, square neckline. She makes sure the make-up and hair is young, to offset her usual “older” designs.

Uli chooses Uli patterned material of black and white paisley and such, stuffing the extra material into a tubular necklace of the same material; Michael creates a simple matte jersey off-the-shoulder white dress with black 3-D belt. Angela creates an “Edwardian” leather shrug, black with white ruffles inside, which is attached onto and over her signature rosetted-outfit of layers and lengths and ruffles again.

Vincent does what is a chic white paneled strapless top with flat black mini skirt, but having so much excess he opts for a cape/shawl thing that upsets the balance of the otherwise clean and smart look.

Jeffrey, wanting to continue to “piss everybody off” as he did with his second (consecutive) win, turns a longer dress idea into a mini with leatherette thigh-high leggings, while Kayne designs a sharp black dress with a shoestring and riveted strapping backing – the only white in the riveted trim.

Michael Kors sees Angela’s outfit as that belonging to a vampire, and Nina counsels her, again, that she wants to make it inspirational but “realistic”.

Laura’s dress, which she sees as “so Josephine Baker,” is well received as a chic, perfectly made number which wins the competition (though not an exemption, as they are down to the final three). Guest judge designer Zac Posen tells her that a store would pick this up and sell it, for sure.

Zac tells Michael his piece is very chic, while M. Kors agrees that it is brilliant, edgy, and Nina Garcia announces she likes the total look.

The judges are mildly disappointed with Jeffrey’s continued rocker thing, telling him that he can still do rock and elegance at the same time without making the outfits look cheap, as this one does.

While Uli’s sleeves are too long, making for a heaviness because of the balance of length of them and the skirt hem, Nina tells her, Vince’s piece misappropriated the extra fabric. The skirt too short and the shawl making for too frumpy a look, the designer judges suggest holding the shawl up at the hem of the skirt. This dramatically adds the needed length and confirms their displeasure for Vince’s piece.

Vince and Angela are re-booted, and Kayne is out. Jeffrey was close, standing on the runway last with him, but Kayne just repeatedly let down the judges.

Ever the wonderful sport that Tim Gunn says he is when he tells Kayne they will surely truly miss him, Kayne tells is a classy departing act. He thanks them all for the opportunity, and tells us before leaving that he is not going to be a seamstress his whole life – that he will go on to do bigger and better designing. He also tells us that just because he plays one on TV he is not really a bitch, but is instead a dynamo ready to gear into the fast lane.

Yeah, Kayne, that runway was a bit slower in speeds for you, but you will zip and race along just beautifully, because of your skills, your approaches, and your beautiful, fun, positive attitudes. Best of the best to you.
