Amazing Race, Amazing Support

Amazing Race, Amazing Support by Roxanne McDonald

Jesus, Louisus, you know you’re watching Amazing Race when your heart starts pounding, you begin cheering as if you had bet money down on one of the teams, and you have stopped doing whatever alternative TV-watching activity in which you usually partake.

Then, you start getting emotionally involved. Already, you are crying when, in this season, for example, the best friend team of Bilal and Sa’eed was booted on the very first leg of the race for a surprise, unidentified Pit Stop. (They were supposed to make it to the Meridian Gate in The Forbidden City, and get schedule of buses for the following morning. No one was told, however, that there were only twenty-two seats and that the last team to arrive at the gate would be eliminated.)

Or, you get choked up as you witness the remarkable support of a partner for his “handicapped” mate – in this case, as Peter cheers on Sarah with her hydraulic prosthetic leg and foot (which is leaking hydraulic fluid), as they have to hike the Great Wall in China, their first destination country of the season. Peter yells out prompts like, “You can do it,” and “You are an All-American superstar.”

Granted, there are pit falls for viewers: some gripe about the inequity; others point out the growing excessiveness of product placement (this season, season ten, with just the first installment, we have already had Thrifty rent-a-cars, these big ol’ Mercedes SUVs, and );

and still others complain about the bottle-necking periods where teams pile up as they wait for a hotel to open or a plane to take off.

But the subjects of the complaints make for the tension in The Amazing Race, which adds to, as does the heart-jamming music score, the excitement for viewers who choose to stay as I prefer, laying on my fat ass smoking and eating fast food, junk food, and any other foodstuff…whether as seen on TV in a commercial or not.

More snacking and sniveling to come, I promise.
