Rock Star Supernova Finale Opens a New Chapter
Rock Star Supernova Finale Opens a New Chapter by Roxanne McDonald

Okay, rocker purists, I was on the mark all along, and told you whenever I had the chance about how his talent and skill, his evocative and provocative style, and even his look would or should take him to winning.
And Yee-hah! Lukas has earned the right to front SuperNova. |
The whole show was, well, super (and not just cause I got my way).
Brooke introduces the best of the best in the world – the final four, Magni, Toby, Dilana, and Lukas.
She describes the previous night’s performances (part one of the finals) as “epic”, and shows clips of highlights. Introducing the best of the best SuperNova and Dave Navarro, she prompts their thoughts on the remaining four. Dave addresses Tommy, Gilbey, and Jason, saying how they can’t lose and how he can’t wait to see who he’ll be on tour with.
Brooke also reports that the previous night’s voting volume broke records across America, Iceland, and Australia.
At some point, the bottom two included Magni, Toby, and Lukas. Dilana, Brooke said, was sitting pretty for the time being. However, and much to my relief, once all the votes were counted, the two at the “bottom” were Magni and Toby.
Magni repeated his performance of Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire”, not only singing but playing as near to Hendrix as is humanly possible. It was another absolutely seamless show, in spite of how he understandably started with a dreadful and stunned look on his face. In fact, when he finished, Jason gave him a standing O.
Toby also had a bummed look in his eyes, but in a very dignified fashion (and as the great performer / actor he is), he did a repeat of Billy Idol’s “White Wedding.” Like Magni, he let it rip as if nothing and everything was at stake, doing his audience interaction/call and response thing like a pro.
Gilbey spoke first, saying that obviously, this was hard for them: “We’ve watched all four of these contestants grow…and do fabulous jobs.” He continued, saying that Magni is such a talented musician that they didn’t know if he was so much fronting the band as part of the band. And with that, he told Magni his time was over.
Dave gave him parting kudos and he thanked everyone, even the house band he sarcastically (in true Magni form) commented he must want to be a part of, and especially his peers.
Jason shouts out over the wailing cheers that Magni is off to become the king of Iceland, and Magni is gone.
Brooke addresses the remaining rockers, telling them they have this one last chance to make a case for why they should be chosen to front Supernova.
Dave tells him he wishes him the best of luck, and that he has shown so much diversity, and Lukas points out how when he first arrived, the band members could have been all egocentric, but were instead amazing guys. He closes by saying he would be honored to lead them on stage.
Dave tells her he wishes her the best of luck and comments on how she has shown herself to be a fighter, strong, determined, and an incredible singer, and Dilana states that she would expect the best represent Supernova. And while Lukas is amazing and Toby is incredible, she adds, “I’M the ONE.”
Dave expresses how impressed he is with his growth and changing, from the guy who walked in at the start to the one who stood before them now, and Toby makes some positive comments about the band and adds that he has had a few beers before the show (all the front row girls laugh) and he is “tossed”.
Tommy says all three are amazing, but to make a decision, the guys have to hear each of them one more time. Each has chosen to do his or her favorite song of the summer:
Lukas does The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony,” prancing and moving about the floor in his long black Nehru jacket and hip-hugging jeans and belt. Perfect. Genius.
Dilana does The Cranberries’ “Zombie”, strutting in her rocker cum fairy princess look. Perfect. Genius.
Toby in his tailored number does The Killers’ “Somebody Told Me.” It is still quite speedy, ends with a scream, and is almost perfect.
Jason speaks to how each one of the finalists are “heroes,” and to Toby says his voice still cuts through no matter how loud the guitar gets, each of his performances improving “another notch, another notch, another notch….” Everyone has been able to see this, Jason continues, and yet, he says, Toby is the next to go home. As the audience, crushed, is quite vocal at this point, Toby puts a finger to his mouth and shushes them. Jason adds that they love him, and he knows this, and Dave reminds him that he is amazing and that he already has a hit album.
Toby, all class, says this was the best time ever, and to be third to Dilana and Lukas who he says are consistently great is an honor. He tells Supernova they made the safest choice, for while it has taken him awhile, “these guys are already great.” He thanks everyone before exiting.
Dave roars that it’s “down to the edgy ones!” He asks Brooke if she can feel it, then tells Dilana and Lukas they look as if they are about to perform a Goth wedding and how (laughing) that’s not a bad idea.
Brooke tells the two that they had the highest number of votes; and Gilbey says this is a tough one: “We’ve been here all summer long just waiting for this moment. You know what? We need a couple more minutes.”
There are only about ten or so minutes left to the show, and of course a commercial break is the LAST interruption we all want to sit through, but what can we do but defer to the masters?
Back in the house (er, on stage, not to be confused with reality TV house), Tommy begins, “Lukas, your look, your energy, your vocals, the way you move … everything has been really amazing for us.” Then, “Dilana, you are enchanting; your voice is amazing …; who doesn’t love you?”
The crowd is getting nutty (and I am peeing a little in apprehension), and Tommy nods to the crowd to help them out, asking, “Who’s it gonna be?”
“As any good group would do, would listen to their fans,” Tommy says, “This person I’m talkin’ about had the highest number of votes: Lukas (pauses) you’re on board. Welcome.”
And the crowd and this writer are ecstatic! I was almost sobbing, as if I had some stake in or responsibility for the dream rocker taking center stage, finally! (Well, I voted a few zillion times….)
But Dave is cool as ever, and addresses Dilana, telling him that he absolutely ADORES her, that she is a phenomenal singer, and that when they go on house band tour in February, she must come, too. She is all over that. Dilana is also honored by Gilbey, who tells her if she wants to make a record when this is done that he offers his services to help write and produce the first record. Dave adds that if she will have him, he would like to play on that, too. How brilliant, kind, and wonderful are they, and how deserving is Dilana? Fantastic way to “let down” the runner-up.
Dilana makes a promise: she will make a CD with Dave and Gilbey and will, she says, “be awesome.” Then she says something to Lukas about getting lost, or on with it, “bitch!” as a wonderful parting joke.
Just as we all are aching to get back to LUKAS!LUKAS!LUKAS! Brooke asks if they aren’t forgetting something…. “Let’s do it!” Brooke asks Lukas over the roars and squeals how it feels, and Lukas says, “It feels just like this. Let’s do it, baby.” Tommy hugs the hell out of the new lead; Gilbey gives him a warm welcome hug; and then they all rock the hell out of two songs, “Be Yourself,” with its catchy rhythm, its stunning lyrics, and its new front doll!!!!! And the second of which they make pause for as Lukas says, “…wanna get my boy out here…,” and Magni strolls on playing a flattop!
The new Supernova stands at the announcing post, arm over arm, Lukas looking breathlessly overwhelmed by the surreality, and Brooke presenting the new band with future world tour that is selling out fast, baby.
Kisses and yeahs to you Lukas, and best to you all, SUPERNOVA.
