More Like The Stinging Bee

More Like The Stinging Bee by Roxanne McDonald

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket I had just written about or thought about how it would be fun to have another “Name That Tune”—and along came “The Singing Bee.” Yikes, careful what you wish for.

Um, well, I’m not sure “The Singing Bee” is all that engaging, though it is the closest to “Name That Tune” I can think of.

As far as entertainment value, it’s more like doing a command performance at a party you don’t want to be at, and having to sit through really bad drinking games with the obnoxious guy who won’t stop singing…and off-key and with the wrong words to boot.

I don’t think you can get drunk enough.

The whole production is poster child for overkill: there are go-go dancers in bee-themed crop tops and minis; there are generic house band and singers—one who even sings the name of the round coming up in a bad imitation of [actually good] Rockapella segments on “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?”; and again, while the contestants are adorable in their fumbling for the words or remembering them but

rendering them in croaky anyman shows of skill, none are endearing enough that we will be sitting at the edge of our seats with phone at the ready to insist on voting them through to the next round.
There’s no interactive voting, anyway. Maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe that’s a moot thing.

The only fun characteristics/elements to “The Singing Bee” are the song selections (not just limited to bubble gum pop or one-hit wonders, but including Southern Rock, Classic Rock, etc.) and Joey Fatone. Some might sniff that Fatone can’t get any work beyond “Dancing with the Stars” and hosting a half-baked show, but he still has a huge following, one that will, I suspect, forgive his selling out to camp it up Chuck Berry style.

Or make that Richard Hayes style, Dennis James style, Tom Kennedy style, or even Red Benson or Chuck Falkner and Bruce Gingell style.

The cast can only be as good as the scripting, usually, and in this case, with the exception of Fatone, it is.

Hell, I’d rather watch a quilting bee.

Nyeah. May as well watch the second showing (PST) of Big Brother 8…if you want really buzz-worthy material.
