Survivors in Their Elements

Survivors in Their Elements by Roxanne McDonald

CBS Survivor 14 Fiji How will the final eight play through—according to their astrological signs?

To get it clear from the start: I have no expertise in the astrology department, just a healthy curiosity…and a tendency to tweak.

EARTH
Just as there was last season, this season with the final eight the majority of elementary substance is in earth, of which there are three of the eight Survivor players. They are “playing” on earth more than in the air (of course) or in or on the water, as besides competing in luxury and immunity challenges in the sand and soil they have home bases on earth. Alex is a Taurus; Cassandra is also a Taurus; and Yau Man is a Virgo.

Notice, that Virgos, for example, are very insistent about control, about maintaining self-control and not being controlled by others. Yau Man may be subtle in his Virgoan ways, but he has maintained his brand of control and I would not be surprised if he lasts to the final three at least. People have often considered him for alliances, and other people have come to him for advice of sorts, grounded and in

control as he is: last night (in episode 10), for instance, he was very quietly and gently asking Stacy to vote out anybody but Earl, and, if her heart would let her, to vote out Alex.
Virgos, ever the pragmatic ones, are like Capricorns and Taureans, grounded, stable, and stalwart. As the earth element, they can offer foundational support, can shape and direct, but too, are so driven to succeed (almost more so than any other signs), they can smother and stifle … regardless of how good their intentions appear.

Earth signs have won “Survivor” three times: Capricorns Tina Wesson and Tom Westman won “Survivor: Australia” and “Survivor: Palau,” respectively; and Virgo Chris Daugherty won “Survivor: Vanautu.”

AIR
There is only one air sign left, Stacy, who is a Libra (and also the only woman left, of course). Maybe the air element is needed to sustain the fire (give it life), maybe for the balance Librans are known for aiming toward, or maybe for communications challenges is Stacy still around….

Then again, of the 14 seasons of Survivor, air signs have won three times–with Aquarian Yul Kwon winning last season on “Survivor: Cook Islands;” with Aquarius Jenna Morasca taking the first prize in “Survivor: Amazon;” and with Libra Aras Baskauskas winning “Survivor: Panama” – and even with most popular (as the humanitarians of the astrological wheel) Aquarius Rupert Boneham taking a million-dollar “Special Survivor: America’s Tribal Council” prize.

FIRE
There are two fire signs playing on Survivor this season – Earl, who is an Aries, and Dreamz, who is a Sagittarius. While fire is of course the sustaining element, bringing to the mix the energy, the drive, and the action, in the same way it can inspire and motivate (as one of the “leading” types), it can also burn up, set to boiling, dry out, and scorch. And besides being dynamic in mixed groups and often ideal as playmates, two fire signs in opposition can be volatile and powerful. Notice in this week’s episode (10), Earl told confession cams he was thinking of ways to “let Dreamz go”.
Two fiery forerunners just won’t cut it much longer: Aries and Leo are infamous for being awesome and simpatico fellows, yet in challenges against one another, or in jockeying for positions of power and leadership, can do some major damage; so if we see Earl and Dreamz sticking around, we are also likely to see some fireworks.

Fire signs have won the grand prize four times: Aries Richard Hatch won the first ever, “Survivor: Borneo;” Sagittarius Vecepia Towery won “Survivor: Marquesas;” and Leos Sandra Diaz-Twine and Amber Mariano took away a million each from “Survivor: Pearl Islands” and “Survivor All-Stars” (though keep in mind Amber would attest to getting spirited along by her Libran mate/now husband, Rob Cesternino).

WATER
Water is heavy on emotion. So we will likely see Boo, a Cancer, and Mookie, a Scorpio, acting out in response to the others more and more. And be warned, water signs are said to be the most powerful of elements, so if and when these guys are threatened, weakened (by deceit), or made

vulnerable (all of which happen every season on Survivor), we will see some potent changes to the tribe dynamic. Scorpios also have a vindictive side, so as we saw and heard of Mookie last night, when he was sent by Cassandra to Exile Island, for example, she will want to be very careful. As he said, “She just made the worst mistake of her life”—and now she will have to suffer the retaliatory consequences.

Water signs took the grand prize three times, too, with Scorpio Ethan Zohn winning “Survivor: Africa;” Pisces Brian Heidik taking “Survivor: Thailand;” and Cancer Danielle “Danni” Boatwright winning “Survivor: Guatemala.”

So whether or not the astrological elements have any significance is as much a shall-see as is the ranking done and opinions offered by armchair survivors like you and me.

  1. I think Cassandra would be surprised to learn that Stacy is the only woman left in the game.
You might want to revise that piece of thundering stupidity in your column.

    Gee Whiz.

You’re going to have people calling you racist and other unpleasant names. How could you do that?

  2. Good God!

Not only did you write that Stacy was “the only woman left,” but I see you also claim that Amber married Rob Cesternino. No she didn’t. She married a guy named “Mariano.” He was on two SURVIVORS and at least one season of THE AMAZING RACE.

Nothing in your argument is credible with blunders that huge.

Is the sign female or are you forgetting Cassandra?
