The Biggest Loser Trainers

The Biggest Loser Trainers by Roxanne McDonald

For some, tough love works. For others, the kid glove approach is best. But what is so effective about drill sergeant humiliation?

Laura Tucker at Reality Shack wrote up an awesome recap and introduction piece for week one of the new season
and I have decided to forego doing the same in favor of a quick look at the styles of the three trainers.

This came up for me, anyway, when I watched the ever-consistently tough Jillian and the ever-driven but sweeter Bob in comparison to the newer and nastier Kim.
Jillian Michaels

Experience:
17 years martial arts practice; 13 years personal trainer

Comments:
Contestants not used to working out, but now need to be aggressive
After working out in desert jogging with giant logs and kicking huge bags and doing lunges in the sand and all, they will find the air-conditioned gym will be a joke
Her people have gone from defeated to being empowered with “blood in their mouths.”
The opposing red and blue teams are going to be looking at the black team as a “pack of warriors.”

Yeah, Jillian is tough on her team, but she does her job with a more other-directed beneficence, really.

Kim Lyons

Experience:
12 years as a certified personal trainer; lifetime athlete in training

Comments
What will get her team through every challenge is wanting it enough.

Responds to a contestant saying how much it is hurting by mocking her and telling her to let it hurt.
Upon discovering a BL is struggling with diet, complains she has put all this effort into teaching them nutrition and what good did it do?
“What part of run do you not understand?”
When another BL hates to run, responds that she hates whining, losing weigh-ins, and eliminations, so “Suck it up.”
Is this the same complaining and self-directed approach I bristled at last season? How Kim cries about her own feelings every time a contestant has pain? I think so.

Bob Harper

Experience:
Over 10 years as a personal trainer who integrates fitness and nutrition for “lasting lifestyle transformations”

Comments:
When one of his BLs complains of hurting knees on a hike, tells him not to push it but to turn back.

Coaches his team before a challenge by telling the players that if they are confronted with “the Mt. Everest of stairs,” they should just respond with, “Bring it on.”

When notified about a team lose [at weigh-in], offers consoling rationale.

When a BL has trouble with the diet, explains the general need for a body to eat to burn/increase metabolism, and then offers a later sit-down time to find a workable solution.

When a struggling BL on his team stays with a workout, he acknowledges her sticking with it and gets her to make positive affirmation about her doing so.

When discovering another BL from an opposing team is crying and despondent, sits with her and takes the time to empower her, too.

Notes how his team has “done every single thing [he has] asked.”

Yeah, they have. Because you are kind but firm, competitive but friendly…, making for the most effective kind of motivator in not only my book but that of many, many others. [At last check, TV Buddy voters have Bob favored over Kim—342 to 235.]
