They were all pretty giddy, but Cliff ruined it for himself when he acted on his silly, his willy nilly, and of course his pissy. |
We the audience have expressed earlier dislike for Marcel, who with his superiority thing turned us off.
Fellow Top Cheftestants disliked Marcel for his lofty attitude, his childishness (as Sam described it), and his aggravation of Betty, then Ilan, then Cliff.
But while Marcel may have alienated everyone but his mother, he was also treated so badly that the producers of Top Chef had to step in. After the successful Quickfire
Challenge, wherein the guest chef Cliff called a “demigod” of cooking, Eric Ripert, deemed their creations beautifully balanced and “perfection”, the final five were already amped. But after the Elimination Challenge, wherein while they were doing the usual amount of in-fighting and a couple of usual tragedies (fish falling on the floor, chocolate not tempered correctly) occurred, the final fibve were so well received that they went back to their loft and commenced drinking.
Elia and Ilan shaved their heads (an action we usually reserve as for psychos); and Cliff took the idea of doing the same to the sleeping Marcel to the point of full Nelson-aggression. Cliff was then called out for it, and asked to leave.
It seems that this is not only an odd behavior that is familiar to the more creative of reality shows (recall how Project Runway has had its share of cheating and
accusations),
but is one which would take so little thinking: Gee, if the rules say don’t wear green and I put on my forest apron, I will likely be booted.
Gee, if I yank a guy from REM sleep, pin him to the floor, and call out for someone to come shave away that Jimmy Neutron do, (and no one comes to assist, either), it is likely I will not become the next Top Chef.
All I will do, however, is highlight Marcel, who has technically had some very fine technical moments…and increase Marcel’s chances to win by default.
To be fair, Cliff did appear contrite (whereas other reality show assholes have merely reinforced their assholian ways). But after-the-fact? Too late to be great.
