I’m Bored To Death

I’m bored to death with what is on TV these days. It gets especially bad during the holidays when it seems that some big red rerun button is pushed or the Fall Season ends and new episodes stop showing.

Do the Neilson ratings even matter anymore? I mean why should there be certain periods of time such as sweeps when there is too much good stuff on and other times when you can’t even find a decent new show to watch.

I hate to rant about how tv sucks because I like watching television so much – but hey – face it – the way they force feed us what they want when they want SUCKS!

Some day soon we won’t have to put up with the way networks schedule their shows. I imagine a time when they will release product much like they do DVD’s or albums.

Sure, there will always be some kind of seasonality – I realize that – but there needs to be less of the force feeding we must endure from those who have power over what we watch.

And there is another disturbing trend that really rubs me the wrong way. The mini-series effect.

I mean – hey – they just don’t give us full seasons of shows anymore, do they?

Is it me or does it seem like the moment I start getting into my favorite shows – like Bored To Death – they are suddenly hitting me with “only 1 more episode left”. That show was excellent! It came and went before I could tell everybody to watch it! And it wasn’t their first season. They should have known Bored to Death was a viable show and fans wanted more than a handful of episodes.

Bored to Death was a freakin’mini series – not a real TV SERIES.

C’mon man – actual real MINI SERIES like the Pacific have more screen time and episodes than a lot of the so called SERIES SERIES like Bored to Death, or Entourage or Nurse Jackie or any of a number of programs.

We’re lucky to get the 20 minutes they give us each week and after what seems like 6 or 8 weeks they pull the plug. That’s just not enough time to develop a show. They take it away from me just when I’m really digging it.

And shows like Real Time with Bill Maher – they spend more time off on hiatus than they’re on. Sure – I realize Bill needs some “me time” too so he can visit Montana or Alabama or wherever he goes and play in front of people at the local comedy shacks – but the weekly show just returns from being off and then they’re gone again for a few months. I want my Real Time EVERY WEEK all year long!

OK, so I better settle down and stop – because I hate to complain about TV sucking because there is so much good stuff on the tube. Boardwalk Empire was great (almost over – 1 episode left?) and Look – the series – is incredible!

I just wish they’d be a little more considerate of developing the show and offering a full experience rather than squeezing in as much as they can into short episodes that only run for a couple of months and then end.

TV series need to have at least 16 episodes before any finale and they should have at least 1 and maybe 2 or 3 episodes that run longer (60 instead of 30 and 90 instead of 60). That would help towards satisfying the fans more.

  1. Bored to Death is a great show but it was too short of a season. I’m looking forward to next season.
