Top 20: Most Popular TV of 2006

Top 20: Most Popular TV of 2006 by Roxanne McDonald

The mental manipulators meet reigning reality TV and comedies.

The scores are in at TV.com, for the 100 most popular TV shows of 2006. Surprisingly, the most popular are rarely reality TV shows, and still fewer are comedies

(though with the real-life drama enticing our primal sides and the mystery genre involving our grey stuff, maybe it is not so surprising).
Ranked on a scale of 1-10, here are the top twenty:

Smallville ranked number 1, with a mean score of 9.0.

Prison Break was number 2, with a rank of 9.3.

Lost, in third place, received a 9.2.

4th: The O.C. — 8.6.

5th: One Tree Hill — 9.0.

6th: Heroes — 9.4.

7th: Grey’s Anatomy 2005 - 9.2.

Tied at 8th and 9th are House and 24, both ranking 9.3.

10th: Scrubs — 9.3
11th: CSI — 9.2
12th: Gilmore Girls — 9.1
13th: Family Guy — 9.2
14th: Avatar: The Last Airbender — 9.3
15th: Desperate Housewives — 8.7
16th: South Park — 9.2
17th: Naruto — 9.3
18th: Charmed — 8.9
19th: Supernatural — 9.2
20th: The Simpsons — 9.2

TV.com doesn’t reveal the demographics, and doesn’t make any all-encompassing claims on judging which of the 100 are the best. I, however, would like to alter the list in favor of my viewing preferences.

While TV.com has Seinfeld at number 41, I would move it to number 1. It’s great that Scrubs is in the top ten, but let’s make it number 2. Then, The Office should be 3. Following, in my line-up of favorites, would be these dynamic dramas, cool-ass comedies, and righteous reality shows:

4. Nip/Tuck (up there, at #23 for TV.com viewers/voters)
5. CSI: Miami (#38 at TV.com)
6. Rockstar INXS or Supernova (not even ranking)
7. King of Queens (forgotten??)
8. Big Brother (not ranked—off season?)
9. American Idol (also not included!?)
10. My Name is Earl (ranked at #42)
11. Boston Legal (not ranked)
12. The Bernie Mac Show (not ranked)
13. Project Runway (also not included)
14. Top Chef (again, omitted from list)
15. America’s Next Top Model (ranks 28th)
16. Beauty and the Geek (not ranked, but to be fair, was so long ago that season 2 ended)
17. The Apprentice
18. The Amazing Race (not ranked)
19. Survivor (coming at #47 at TV.com)
20. That Seventies (70s) Show (also not included)

Could be the voters are younger at TV.com; could be they forget about the seasonal shows that skip a season; or are they boycotting, so to speak, certain broadcast stations?

Keep Bernie Mac alive! Remember the 70s! Run those marathons! And happy new year to all the brilliant creators of what is still our most favorite form of entertainment—the almighty TV!
